WEEK 4:
User Target/Audience Feedback
Who you connected with: Mckay Ballstaedt - Student Government Advisor for Corner Canyon High School
How you connected: Phone Conversation
What you shared:
I shared the current logos: Wordmark, Lettermark and Primary Riverhawk Logo
I shared the School Motto, Slogan and Creed.
What question were asked what feedback was provided.
What is a key ways to create a sense of belonging in schools?
It starts with the freshman (or some schools the sophomores). First impressions matter. When that new group of students walks into the school they don't know what to expect, they don't know what the vision is. You need to have a clear vision of what it means to be a part of that school. It comes from simple things like T-shirts, Pins, Waterbottles, Posters around the school, Posters in the classroom, Banners, Cheers . . . and then as all those little things add up they realize the tone of the school. So really its about putting consistent messaging into many aspects of the school so that its almost impossible not to get some taste of what the vision is.
How does branding help or hurt that opportunity to create a vision?
Branding starts with the message. Its like having the right words before you use the right tone. Its great to have a lot of energy and enthusiasm when rallying people together, but they are really looking for the words to feel connection. If you have a key theme, motto or message and you consistently apply it to the small things, it becomes natural for students to associate the school with it. Having nice logos makes it easy to produce things that students will think is worth while and quality, but associating that with a good message will make the effect you want.
What do you look for when evaluating a good school logo?
It has to be flexible. I want to be able to use it on a poster, on a T-shirt, on social media, in a hallway banner and it still feels like the same brand. A good system has variety but still holds together. It also needs to have some kind of emotional resonance. If it feels generic or like it could be for any school, students won’t connect with it. But if there’s something specific the school culture or values, it can be a powerful unifier.
What helps reach the student who isn’t into athletics or clubs?
You have to meet them where they are. Not every student wants to be on a team or in a leadership role, but they still want to feel like they matter. That’s where the small touches really count, like having inclusive messaging in classroom posters, offering reward items like water bottles or shirts that recognize different types of students. When the brand shows up in everyday spaces, not just pep rallies, it gives those quieter students a chance to feel seen too.
How can a school reinforce its vision through events or campaigns?
You take your message and you find ways to build moments around it. For example, if your message is “Rise with Purpose, Soar with Pride” you might create a campaign where students nominate each other for how they’ve shown purpose or pride. You could do a Spirit Week theme around each part of your motto, or have teachers decorate their doors with interpretations of the school values. It doesn’t have to be complex, it just has to feel connected and consistent. Students notice when messaging is intentional and not just background noise.
What makes a student feel connected to the success of their school?
They need to see how their actions matter. If the school is celebrating achievements that feel out of reach, only big test scores or state championships, it’s hard for most students to relate. But if success includes things being nominated by teachers for helping a classmate, showing extra effort, or leading with kindness, then more students feel like they are part of the school’s success. When the brand reflects that broader idea of achievement, students take more pride in the whole school’s progress, not just their own.
Briefly indicate what you plan to do according to the feedback you received. In other words, given what you're hearing, what do you think will need to be adjusted moving forward?
One thing that stood out in the feedback was how important it is for all students, not just the involved or outgoing ones, to feel connected to the school’s identity. That made me think more about how the brand can show up in smaller ways
I’m planning add a focus on designing something like a school pride shirt for incoming students or banners with the school motto that could be in classrooms or around the school. I also want to explore how the R.I.S.E. creed could be used in some visual ways.
